Mayor Richard Sage

District Council of Grant

0428 388084

Richard Sage has 17 years’ experience as an Elected Member in Local Government. He has been Mayor of the Grant District Council since April 2010.

Having owned and run a small business, Richard has been instrumental in his extensive knowledge and ability to initiate and bring to fruition many projects for the Council and community. His intimate knowledge of the procedures and processes required to engage in the mining sector led to the Council leading a process of scoping the skill sets and abilities of individuals and companies within the region and across the Victorian border to set up the Mount Gambier Airport as a Fly In/Fly Out Hub to connect to the Mining sector.

Richard is heavily involved in seeking opportunities for the local area and undertaking initiatives to generate business and community development leading to improved employment and economic outcomes for the region. Richard has long term vision for community development and has worked on many extensive projects from conception to completion since he first stood for Local Government and has worked tirelessly for his community. Richard is currently a valued member and contributor to the Limestone Coast Regional Development Board.

Richard has advocated for many new State Government projects in the region including the Mount Gambier Hospital and the Mount Gambier Prison extensions to utilise local building contractors and subcontractors as well as suppliers wherever possible. This has led to approximately 50% or more in value of these projects to be sourced locally, and as a result, the State Government has now recognised the need to utilise local labour and resources, which has led to it now being a state policy. The Government has appointed a Project Facilitator to monitor any new projects state wide so that they can contract this local content.

Other projects Richard has been involved in include the recent upgrades to the Blackfellows Caves and Port MacDonnell marine facilities, restoration of the Port MacDonnell jetty and the construction and renovation of the Port MacDonnell Community Complex. Richard has also been involved in setting up the Marine Parks Advisory Group to facilitate the introduction of Marine Parks.

Richard’s advocacy role has included being on the State Government’s Roundtable to place conditions of the recent sale of the forest harvest rights. Richard lobbied to ensure local mills had first rights to the harvested timber under a competitive pricing scheme to ensure jobs and value adding continued in Mount Gambier and surrounding areas.

Richard would be suited to a re-appointment on the RDA Limestone Coast Board based on his experience and achievements outlined above.
