City ’s Profile:

Sprawling along the Songhua River, Jilin City is the second largest city in Jilin Province, with an area of 27,000 square kilometers and a population of 4.276 million.

Jilin is referred to as a river city because of Boat Sailing on the Songhua River, a verse composed by Emperor Kang Xi of the Qing Dynasty during his inspection tour of the east. It is surrounded on all sides by the offset of the Changbai Mountains, and the Songhua River that flows in a S-shaped course through the urban area looks like a blue ribbon.

Jilin City has the Fengman Hydropower Station and a large chemical industrial town. It has a solid industrial foundation with complete industrial sectors. Tourism is an industry under well development there.

Economic Features:

In 2000, the GDP of Jilin totaled RMB 182 billion, with the per capita total being RMB 6,842. Provincial financial revenue on whole items budget in general finished RMB 18.402 billion, of which local public financial income was RMB 10.382 billion. Provincial general fiscal expenditure was RMB 26.067 billion. Total value of fixed assets reached RMB 58.31 billion. One of the most economically important provinces, Jilin is also one of the main commodity grain producers in China. In 2000, total agricultural output value was RMB 59.77 billion and total grain output 32.76 billion jin. Industry is a major economic sector in Jilin. In 2000, scale-over enterprises completed industrial added value of RMB 49.89 billion, rose by 13.8% compared with 1999 by calculated in comparable price. The Changchun-based First Automobile Works (FAW) is one of China's most important automobile manufacturers. However, because of its relatively short history of economic development, the province faces austere social and economic pressures caused by rapid population growth and uneven economic development.

Tourist Attractions:

Jilin City is a popular destination for tourists to come each winter to view the magnificent rime ice  on trees along the banks of the Songhua River, (the river is the only river in the region that doesn't freeze in winter). The rime ice is a natural phenomenon that occurs every year during January and February. It is a result of when water vapor rises up from the warm Songhua River to meet the cold -20 °C night air, causing the crystallisation of water vapour on willows branches. The ice-rimed trees in Jilin are one of the four natural wonders of China, along with the Guilin Mountains and Streams, Yunnan Stone Forest, and Three Gorges on the Yangtze River.

There are more places to visiMeteorite Museum (largest stony meteorite of a documented meteorite fall), North Hill Park (North-West of Jilin), Dragon Pool Mountain Park, Songhua Lake (South-East of Jilin).
